I never would have thought there existed a short book list that included both Denis Johnson's Jesus' Son and David Shields' Reality Hunger; Leave it to James Franco to bring them together in a recent "Best books..." list for The Week magazine.

Anyway, Carver's weed and whiskey is just a walk in the park compared to the serious addiction of Johnson's protagonist. Here is "Steady Hands at Seattle General," one of the shorter stories in the bunch, and a fine choice for a Saturday night read.
