"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates

In honor of Halloween, here is the first in a weeklong series of scary stories.

What I found to be was most disconcerting about this story, although Oates manages the suspense masterfully, is the threat of violent rape juxtaposed vocabulary reminiscent of a more innocent era.

Gosh-golly, but "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" is a daunting tale.
