"To a Good Home" by Bret Anthony Johnston

I sought out Bret Anthony Johnston's "To a Good Home" when I heard it won the 2014 Emily Clark Balch Prize for Fiction from Virginia Quarterly Review, where it was published last year.

I cannot tell you how good this story is! Heartbreak, turkey vultures and whitetail deer--you really just have to read it.

Never is heartbreak so soothing, so beautiful, so thoroughly palatable and crystal clear, than when in Johnston's capable hands.
