"Tenth of December" by George Saunders
Not only is this story appropriate, this 10th of December, it's also damn good! I could read it over and over again--partly for the wordplay that results from Eber's malfunctioning brain, but mostly because I like and sympathize with both Robin and Eber, so thoroughly.
